"words of wisdom" from my brunei boss back in 2007...

When we first met, both of us didn't think too much of each other, we both thought the other person was just average, nothing striking, and never imagined that we'd be together less than a month later. But somehow, after meeting and having the opportunity to talk more, mysteriously a bond was beginning to form. Eventually, things seemed to just fall into place, like random bricks falling from the sky but miraculously landing in the right timing and pattern to form a uniform brickwall. Initially unknown to either of us, we fell in love. She later told me that right at the beginning i said and did things that 'sparked' her, while i myself was quickly falling for every single thing she did, from her smile, to the way she talked, and just the way we were able to click so naturally. We both found the love we were waiting all our lives for, one where both parties just fall in love at the same time and just grow in that love exponentially. We found a love that required no compromise on either party, while it inspired a willingness to sacrifice certain things, and change certain things that needed to change.

These are memories u need, you don't want a 'marriage of convenience'. You want to be able to truthfully say that you fell in love, and are able to talk about the process of falling in love over and over again, and for it to be something you and her mutually feel happy about. Before you go into it, think carefully what you like about her. There will be things that aren't quite right, so question urself whether you are compromising those things just to be with her. Think abt whether u are giving up ur principles. Weigh it out, and decide if u will be happy with her still 1 month, 6 months, 1 year from now. Don't go into something where one party is giving out so much more than the other. It must be roughly equal, sometimes u may love her more, sometimes she may love u more. It must work out that way, otherwise the relationship will be stressful and tiresome, with frequent bouts of insecurity. Love is a commitment to stay on course despite of the uncertain road ahead. It is a risk, requiring courage and sacrifice. Love must be governed by not just emotions but logic and common sense. Love must bring more happiness than pain. Love is evidenced through actions and garnished with words. Love requires you to pour your entire self into it, if u hold back even a little, it will cease to exist before you know it. These are the things u need to prepare yourself for, but make very sure she is on the same page and frequency, otherwise you may face heartache later.

another year gone by...another year older (officially out of the twenty-sthgs category -_-'')...another super long hiatus from my oh-so-neglected blog =p

2011 has been generally good to me. just to name a few positives...

didnt fall majorly sick except once where an mc was needed...
got myself tested for thalassemia and result was negative =)
did a health check-up, blood sugar and what nots all ok except bp which is bordering on above normal...
had a lucky break at work whereby i got to travel to the US on a business trip and extended my stay to visit New York and Washington DC =)
surprisingly promoted to senior engineer...
finally took part in the northface 100 race
proud owner of an iphone4

as for some negatives
bp continue to be a worrisome aspect for my health - dont know if it really is due to hypertension or what =(
got rid of the 2 lousy shares on hand and hard earned gains from stocks over 2 years became negative =(
marathon timings took a tumble due to lack of mileage training...

as for the major changes (and the super positives) to my life this past year...
am now a baptized Christian =)
proposed to my darling and she said yes =)
balloted for a flat and got our first choice unit despite being 54th in queue =)
wedding prep has begun slowly but steadily with the help of great frens who shared superb lobangs

2012 will be a year that will be financially and emotionally draining with the house and wedding prep going into full swing but i know i have the full support of my sweetie, my family and most importantly our Lord Jesus Christ.

thank you 2011 for all the wonderful memories...and last but not least, thank you dear for your love , care and support all this while. Huggies and muaggies =)

4hr 56min...terribly disappointed...i had hoped to at least churn out a 4hr 30min with the lack of training due to US trip...but sadly...it was not to be...barely 21km into the run and my quads had started to hurt...it kind of just went downhill from there =(

had one the luckiest break so far in my career at TOS whereby i got to visit the U.S as part of a business trip!

a week at Connecticut for work...followed by another week at NY and DC for leisure. was most fortunate that Bryan had the itinerary all planned out for the 3 of us =)

being a very sight-seeing-ish itinerary, we were able to cover alot of ground...visited many of the memorials and museums. was most impressed by the architecture and the details of the buildings/memorials.

2 weeks away from home made me miss many things back here in sg...the food, potable tap water, the mrt and the buses, the warm weather (only when i was at liberty+ellis island - ha). And of course, i missed being with my sweetie and my family.

it's been almost a week since my return... this time last week i was still on the plane...struggling to get some shut-eye...wishing the baby a few rows in front would stop crying...praying that i will arrive safely back to my loved ones.

when i first started this blog back in Feb 2006, i never thought it would end up the way it is now...there were only 15 entries in 2010 and all except 4 were updates on my races...as compared to 149 entries in 2006.

yes, i've neglected this blog of mine...dwindling number of entries compounded with dwindling number of words per entry....

but i guess stuff like this happens when u prioritize...it's not a bad thing really... prioritizing...provided one does it correctly of course...

point is much has happened since my last attempt at a wordy blog entry (and i will tell you that entry was in Aug '09 titled "the art of getting rejected...")
- i've managed to find someone who adores me as much as i adore her
- i've cleared my msc course
- i've re-discovered my 4hr marathon form
- i've gotten more in touch with the Lord

end up squeezed out only 4 bullet points...ha....

and you might also wonder whatever happened to the "transformers-loving, gundam building adrian"? he is still around...no doubt more subdued and toned down...

and you might wonder whatever happened to the "i want to grow some muscles adrian"? he is still hanging around somewhere la...i hope he'll get more gym time in 2011...

with the msc course now out of the picture, there will be more time freed up for the many many other things waiting for me to do. the thought of having more time just excites me =)

initial plan was to maintain the 4.5hrs cus i kept thinking of my very memorable sundown 2009...4.5hrs with no major aches and pains...

but then i actually caught up with the 3hr45min pacer group and i thought...hmm...maybe i can actually do better this year...and i even fantasized about my sub4 dream timing...

well...the dream started fading when the distance between me and the pacers widened...and slowly the 4hr pacer group overtook...followed by the 4hr15min group...i was then resigned to my 4.5hr timing again...

as i got out of the dreaded ecp...the aches on my legs were getting unbearable...had to stop twice...once for each calve to stretch...my big toes were hurting (no idea why)...and the same thoughts which i get during every marathon started filling my head: why do i put myself thru this??? maybe i should hang up my marathon shoes??? maybe i should just take half marathon for sundown next year???-well the last thought only applies for this year

and for the very first time, i could not sprint at the last stretch along city hall leading up to the finishing line...my calves were threatening to cramp on me...and my right calve eventually did at the medal/finisher t collection point...i was like writhing in pain and almost wanted to just sit down and writhe all i could, but the ground was really muddy...so i writhed standing up...until the pain subsided...ha...

so...came back with 2 big toes with its nails all blue-ish....aching legs...and a timing of 4hr18min on my watch...have been bathing in deep heat ever since....ha

considering it was pieced together by students, you could say it wasn't the most professionally organized race...

but i heard it's an annual event...i'm wondering how the previous years fared...i'm pretty sure there'll be plenty of complaints for this year's...

i'm just glad i didnt get caught in the rain which started pouring after i came back...but then the rain stalled me at src for like 30min....afterwhich i had to wait 45min for the bus to arrive...which made me well-annoyed...

i understand it was raining...and maybe it was during off peak timing...but 45min?! wtf?!

getting rejected by girls isnt something guys like to experience..i'm sure girls won't like it either if it happened to them also...

to date...my "kenna rejected" counter has gotten 8hits...out of which only 1 was as close as i ever got to a "relationship"...

and it's that 1 hit from which i learnt a painful lesson of what happens when you give up too early...looking back, i would say she was the only one out of the 8 who looked past the quiet adrian...the only one who didnt mind spending quiet moments together...

the rest of the 7hits couldnt look past the quiet and boring adrian...we can't blame them really...after all they were looking for chatty and interesting partners who could entertain them...to them adrian had none of the qualities they were looking for i guess...ha

most of these 7hits were actually hit and run cases...a few adopted the "straight-forward you're not my type" rejection approach...a few adopted the "it's not you it's me" rejection approach...a few adopted the "i'm not free...maybe another time" approach...1 adopted the "take the spare tire for a ride followed by a i don't think i'm suitable for you" approach...

some pple reading this entry might think sad ol' adrian is just complaining because he's clueless on how to get a partner...yes...i do have alot of crap to get off my chest...and to be honest...i'd really wish i wasn't such a loser when it comes to girls...

dun care le...wait for someone who can accept me for what i am...wait until cow come home, go out and come home again also liddat...it's time to change to suit the surroundings

clocked 4hr32min on my watch for this one...even though there was no improvement timing wise, it was my best marathon outing, pain-wise, since my first marathon back in scm 2006.

early on in the run i tried to maintain within 6min per km and hydrated myself whenever i could...i even power-gelled at 10+km...

as compared to previous marathons where i started hydrating only after 10km and power-gelled much much later...

result was there was no recurrence of those immense pain in the legs which had to force me to completely stop running! i've never ran non-stop for so long in a marathon! walking was kept at a minimal and i grabbed for deep heat only once!

considering i didnt clock any mileage prior to this marathon, i'd say i'm mightily pleased with the result...

all i could remember was that i was doing a routine adjustment of my ass to relieve the numbness around the LP/ass region and next thing i know i was in push up position on the ground...

with no training done to prepare for the marathon, i gave myself a target which was to come back within 4.5hr...

took me about 4hr 28min to finish...totally pooped...

the run was filled with muscle aches and painful joints...the crappy part was only 7km into the race, the pain (and the hungry stomach) started to kick in...dreadful i tell you...dreadful...in the past i was well over the 21km mark before all the shenanigans started...

i wonder how many more marathons i can endure...

had retail therapy at saucony warehouse sale with choo and tang after that...now that was shiok...ha

me and boss kevin had initially wanted to have bak kut teh at hong lim food centre...
but unlike our previous trip here, the long queue at heng kee indicated the stall was open!!!! and we decided to have this instead....hohohohohohoho

look at the queue man (and it was still there when we left)...we had to wait for 20min for our turn...by then they had run out of chicky drumsticks...

and it was finally in front of us after 20mins...

frigging superb curry gravy...the chicken was alright(was a little disappointed with the serving portion though)...plenty of tau-pok...a few slices of fishcake...plus 1 big chunk of potato......they had choices of $4/5/6....we took the $5...

we finished ALL of the gravy...cus it was so damn good...boss kevin said once u've tried this stall, you wouldnt want to have the one at the 2nd storey...

in any case if you're ever at hong lim food centre...make sure to queue up for this...it's well worth your wait...and if it's closed or sold out, you can make your way to the other end of level 1 and have a go at "morning bah kut teh"(yes they spelled it as "bah")...its the black type of bak kut teh....

refreshingly muddy...full of snaking slopes...together with the usual east side humidity...gives you an enormous sense of well-being upon completion that's for sure...

at the beginning you kept siam-ing the muddy parts of the route hoping to get as little mud on your shoes as possible but once into the "forest area", no escape le...siam here will land on mud...siam there will also land on mud...

at one point there was a sign saying "obstacle ahead"...i was like...hmmm...and then i saw a small muddy "pool"...you needed to jump onto the sole piece of dead wood in the middle of the "pool" so as to kenna as little muddy water as possible and after that go up a muddy step...

and as i went up my right shoe planted into the mud and out came my right foot...i was like...knn...as i turned back to retrieve my shoe...all the muddy stuff gushed into my shoe when i pulled it out from the mud...

and you know that squishy feeling when you put on a wet pair of shoes that got drenched in the rain? that was the exact feeling i got after putting my shoe back...except it's squishing with muddy water instead of rain water...

what followed next once out of the "forest area" was a slew of snaking climbs up and down the trail route slopes...it was FULL of slopes i tell you...FULL of frigging slopes...

came back in about 47min...both legs from knees down all muddied...shoes...no need to say le...heh...

had one of the scariest dreams ever last night...

it went something like this...i was at somebody else's home...at whose home i do not know...and for what purpose i also do not know...

all of a sudden some kind of atomic bomb explosion occurred at a few blocks away from the block i was in...it all happened so quickly...after which all you could see was this shockwave of dust rippling outwards from the explosion site...

what came next was news reporting that this explosion occured at selected blocks around the area i was in...it was like those blocks were randomly selected for obliteration using some kind of weapon with pin-point accuracy

what would happen if one day singapore is invaded by someone...or some thing?...i hope we don't live long enough to see that become reality...

Weiliang emailed an article called "Sometimes we need to rethink what it means to succeed" by John Bingham...thought these 2 paragraphs are worth mentioning and are definitely applicable to our lives...be it running or non-running

wasn't expecting to improve on last year's timing (although i really wanted to) cus i had been sick on friday...some bloody throat infection...was just glad i could make it to the run and make it back without any trouble...

i had set myself a ceiling of 5min per km...and i was doing 4.5min/km at the very beginning...couldn't maintain the pace while coming out of ecp and it dropped to 5min/km and once into the new marina barrage route...i was struggling to keep up and it was down to
5+min/km already...

came back with a watch time of 1hr 50min...5min slower compared to last year...and with legs that ached more compared to last year...i shudder at the thought of year end's stan chart marathon...being in my worst long distance running form to date coupled with the drop in training due to studies, i'm convinced that it will be one hell of a torturous 42km for me...

this week i finally got one of many life lessons etched into my head...about meaning what you said and saying what you mean...about bracing yourself for the worst possible outcome for those "if you never try you'll never know" situations...

disappointed? yes...but pointless now really...character building remember? lol...don't do unto others what you don't want others to do onto you...ha...oh well

was doing my chores this morning and mum asked the question which i saw coming...i guess she figured something out since i've not been going out as often as before...

i didn't say much but she knew what was going on and she told me to take it as a learning experience...

after that she asked me about my friends...about ronald...linli...ian...i'm surprised she remembers them and what they were doing...she asked if ronald's kid is walking already? she asked if linli is back from his overseas studies? she asked if ian is back from australia already?
